What is toenail fungus?

Toenail fungus is a common nail infection that usually starts as a white or yellow patch under the tip of your toenail. Toenail fungus can make the color, shape, and even the thickness of your toenail change. The nail can also become brittle and/ or start to crumble.

Do you have toenail fungus?

Toenail fungus can be present for years without showing any major symptoms, but if you notice any discoloration of a toenail or toenails then you may have toenail fungus. If you notice anything unnusual with your toenails schedule an appointment with your podiatrist so they can take a look. Toenail fungus can have some serious complications if left untreated.

What are your options?

Toenail fungus treatments vary by the intensity of the infection and based on what type of fungus you have. Common toenail fungus treatments include the following:

  • Topical creams that are applied on the nail
  • A nail lacquer
  • Anti-fungal prescription
  • Treatment to remove the infected areas of the nail and or soft tissue
  • Complete removal of the toenail (in severe cases)
